alarm 30

ok i just chatted with kendrick about how i cannot foresee myself drawing my current pay for the rest of my life. he too, is thinking about the same thing! i think at our current life stage, consideration can no longer be restricted for ourselves but for our family as well.

to my dear students, if ever one day i'm no longer in the profession, please understand that it is not that i have ceased to pace with you, but i'll be pacing with you in another way, that's all.

端午节快乐!

2 weeks ago, my mum asked me if i want to eat rice dumplings this year. not that i can't buy those commercial ones in the market but what she meant was if i want to eat those made by her. strangely, i have never thought of buying those commercial ones and i've always had the luxury fo tasting home made ones since i was born. of course! would have been the truthful and most immediate reply but i said no. for a simple reason, i didn't want my gluttony be a reason for her to work so hard. my mum replied in hokkien:

我现在可以做, 我就做。
等我老了,不能做了,你要吃就没得吃了。

what she said made me feel so guilty :(

i woke up earlier than usual to make rice dumplings with my mum on sunday, which used to be a mass family activity when my grandmother was around. since her departure, my mother and i had been doing this on our own, which really starts from preparing the ingredients way before the actual day. the actual day begins at 6:30am with frying the ingredients, until the evening where i had to delivery the dumplings to my aunties. end of the day, my mother still very much cherish her kinship with her sisters.

to those who had the chance to eat the dumplings, its more than just tasting nice.

thank you.谢谢.merci.arigato.gracias.

i was chatting with my daughter over msn this morning and below is an extract of our conversation:

JO : hey dy!
JO : wanted to thank you
JO : but havent had the chance
君 : huh? thank me for?
JO : u know i was in this rough period
JO : very lost, n quite depressed
JO : then i talked to ben la
JO : n i recalled this thing u said!
JO : when we identified that i have an external locus of control
JO : i remb u once said "if u build ur confidence on wad others think of u, then the moment they change their mind ur confidence will collapse"
JO : cant remember when u said it though... very long ago

all i could say is i'm truly happy for her, albeit haven't been seeing her physically and be there for her when she's down. oh and her 2 uncollected ang baos.

emailed my aunt yesterday about a job offer i thought she might be interested in. she declined the offer in her reply and in turn told me a secret:

"I have just converted to a christian and I am going to remove the altar from my home, my two children too will fellow me to become christian, except my husband. I am feeling so great after believing in Lord Jesus..."

it did struck me that somehow my extended family have changed eversince my grandmother passed away when i was uni 2. i guess thats what happens when the pull factor ceased to exist. we saw less of each other and have less mass gathering like we used to have. or maybe its just me not staying with my parents =/

i replied my aunt that i respect her decision and may she find continued joy in her belief.

thank you and may god bless you she replied.

MYR and SGD

i went jb on sunday to have my hair cut. left the house at about 12 and reached city square at 2pm. the jam was really bad :(

had lunch at the food court which is managed by food junction. and gosh! one nasi padang + bandung costs about $4SGD

then, the hair cut (which really was the highlight of this trip) for $30MYR.

padini and seed are having their sale, but nothing caught my eye. even though they are marked down for 50%. some how i'm just not crazy over this season's collection.

a break down of how much it costs to spend about 1.5hrs across the causeway (excluding the traffic jam):
1. petrol to meet the 3/4 tank mark = $40SGD
2. toll at the singapore's custom = $1.50SGD
3. toll at the malaysian's custom = $2.60MYR
4. lunch at food court = $9.89MYR
5. hair cut = $30MYR
6. parking = $4MYR
7. petrol to fill the remaining 1/4 tank = $25MYR

the final bill comes to about $74SGD.

and oh, for $74SGD i bought mum a pair of red wings shoes on saturday.

the other thing that makes my day is my brother sending me an sms wishing me happy birthday for the first time in 25 going to 26 years of his life. i guess having been through a year of roller coaster ride with him made us value each other more. and i'm really glad that he is opening and talking to me more often.

many thanks also to the friends who still remember and fowarded their wishes as well.
